About Youth Unity For Voluntary Action
The seed of this organization was sown as a collective effort by a group of enthusiastic youths in
Makdampur area of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, in the year 1994. Initially it was a common
platform for the local young boys and girls, indulging in interactive discussions related to their
education, career, personality and knowledge development, as well as on the issues of social
development. Gradually, they started involving in different social development activities.
This endeavour finally worked as the driving force behind forming a full-fledged civil society
organization. Thus, in the year 1996, a trust body was formed on the National Youth Day, the 12th
January with seven likeminded young people. This organization has been named as Youth Unity
for Voluntary Action or popularly known by its acronym YUVA.
Since its inception, YUVA has been working as an apolitical civil society organization, committed
to bring in a tangible change among the downtrodden people of different communities in three
districts of Kolhan area in Jharkhand. The priority target population includes women, children,
adolescents, and youths of the backward and tribal communities. Though initially it started
working in the field of basic education, based on their experience and social needs, it went on to
focus on health and nutrition, women, child and adolescents’ development / empowerment,
rights and entitlements, and leadership building.
In very little span of time, YUVA has got positive recognition from the local communities,
government departments, support and collaborating agencies. A very strong rapport has also
been developed with the people within its working area due to ensuring the community
participation and sincere commitment towards its mission and objectives.
